中国认知障碍症的发病率达5%，且预计每年平均将有30～40万人的增长。2014年止可被统计到的认知障碍症患者达600万人。预计2020年，中国将会有超过800万的认知障碍症患者。全球对于认知障碍症的疾病研究仅仅40多年的历史。日本作为先进的医疗事业国家，已对与认知障碍症进行了20年的研究。欧洲各国也都开始对认知障碍症建立诊断和缓解、护理治疗系统。中国还没有针对认知障碍症的诊断和治疗的分类以及专用的药物与护理体系。国内对于认知障碍症的研究还没有形成规模。
在此背景下，第一届国际认知障碍研讨会（Cognitive Impairment Symposium）于2016年在上海顺利召开。2018年是国际认知障碍研讨会召开的第三年，本届研讨会将在澳大利亚墨尔本与亚洲核医学论坛同期举办，亚洲核医学院将力邀三位国际知名专家进行专题演讲，他们分别是日本的Hiroshi Matsuda教授，香港的Vincent Mok教授，以及印度的Rakesh Kumar教授。
